The mission of A Scholarly Skater Art History is to make
historical art and architecture accessible to everyone.
I’m Alexandra, an independent art historian from the United States. Welcome to my website!
I have a B.A. with honors in art history and truly believe that looking at art can enrich everyone’s life as much as it has mine. Studying the art of the past is the closest to time travel I’m likely to get, and it also helps me to see the world through other people’s eyes – a type of empathy we could all use a bit more of in our lives. That’s why my work focuses on making art and museums feel accessible to the public.
I originally founded A Scholarly Skater Art History as a venue to continue doing art history during a transitional time after graduating. More than a decade later, I’ve written about 400 articles here on topics from forgotten artists to major architectural styles to advice for art lovers – all the while continuing to learn, study, and hone my craft.
I have been a regular contributor to DailyArt Magazine and The Collector, and my work has appeared on Art Herstory, Artips, Citaliarestauro, the Questroyal Fine Art blog, HeadStuff, and Jo’s Art History Podcast, among others.
My Books
I am also the author of several e-books aimed at helping people better understand art and feel more comfortable in art museums. In particular, The Art Museum Insider is designed to teach new viewers to interpret art for themselves through similar techniques to those used by art historians.
My books are inspired by my recognition of how many people feel perplexed by art and the lack of quality art history content for intelligent, capable beginners. To address this, my books aim to provide clear explanations and usable art appreciation techniques without dumbing things down.
