Some Old-Fashioned Christmas Beauty

IMG_0285
Merry Christmas to all my readers and their loved ones!

I really like it when I’m just going about my daily life and a great writing topic magically appears in front of me. Such was the case with this post. I was decorating my Christmas tree, found this box of ornaments, and realized I just had to write about them.

My grandmother gave us some vintage Christmas ornaments a few years ago. Since she spends the holidays at my house every year, Nana doesn’t really decorate her house for Christmas anymore, and she figured we might like to use her old ornaments. We barely have enough space on the tree to fit our own, so we have never actually put any of these up. This is probably a good thing since they are quite fragile, but we carefully wrapped them in tissue paper and packed them into an old shoebox for safekeeping.

There are fourteen glass ornaments, and thirteen of them would be usable. One is broken at the top, so there’s no place to put an ornament hook, but it is still pretty to look at. Most seem to be hand-decorated, but a few look like they have some sort of transfer designs. Here are a few of my favorites:

Two lovely lantern-like ornaments.

Such beautiful decoration on this one.

This one has decoration on one side and a concave, faceted cut-out on the other. I can imagine the facets would look beautiful with light reflected in them. There is a similar ornament in pink as well.

When I asked my grandmother about these, she said that she doesn’t remember where she got them all. She may have purchased some at a department store, and she probably inherited some from her mother. All we know for sure is that they are at least fifty years old.

  1. They are beautiful, I collect them and have a couple of hundred. There are a couple from the 50’s and the rest early 60’s, the santa and lanterns are worth more than the rest, so please pack them with care 🙂
