December 14th: A Winter’s Walk by Jacques-Joseph Tissot

This elegant young woman is all dressed up for an afternoon stroll through the snow. I love how her black coat and the red lining of her bonnet contrast so beautifully with the white background. The artist, Jacques-Joseph “James” Tissot (1836-1902) was a French-born painter who worked in France for part of his career but had moved to London by the time he made this painting. Tissot specialized in fashionable and highly-detailed portraits and scenes of high-society men and women; he also painted religious works.
